This is a crime that police officers in Ingolstad, in southern Germany, are likely to remember for a long time.

A 23-year-old German-Iraqi woman murdered her look-alike in order to fake her own death, according to information from the Guardian spotted by our colleagues from BFMTV.

Last August, the body of a young woman was found in a Mercedes parked in this Bavarian town.

Thanks to the vehicle, the police quickly identify her as Sharaban K, a 23-year-old beautician based in Munich and of Iraqi origin.

Her relatives confirm that the body, larded with stab wounds, is indeed that of the young woman.

But when they read the autopsy report the next day, investigators are shocked to discover that it is ultimately Khadidja O, an Algerian beauty blogger from Heilbronn in the neighboring state of Baden-Württemberg, also 23 years old.

The victim's long, straight, black hair and thick layer of make-up fooled the police, who said the two women look "amazingly" alike.

Sharaban K was arrested on August 19 along with Sheqir K, a 23-year-old Kosovar, suspected of being his accomplice.

The two suspects are remanded in custody.

Look-alikes contacted on the Internet

The investigation is now coming to an end and the investigators have managed to trace the murderous journey of the two alleged assassins, which was communicated to the German press on Monday.

Sharaban K, began by contacting several young women looking like her on social media in the week before the murder, operating under different aliases.

"By making various promises, she tried to provoke meetings, which at first failed," said Veronika Grieser from the Ingolstadt prosecutor's office.

Attracted by "a commercial offer", according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Khadidja O. finally agreed to meet Sharaban K, who would have gone to pick her up by car on the day of the murder, accompanied by Sheqir K. They would then have stabbed her to death in a wood, before depositing the body in the car.

"The victim was killed with more than 50 stab wounds, his face completely disfigured," police spokesman Andreas Aichele told the tabloid Bild.

The two alleged accomplices then allegedly parked the vehicle in Ingolstadt, in a place where they probably knew Sharaban K's parents would find him.

It is indeed the latter who reported to the police the presence of the body of what they thought was their daughter.

It now remains to be seen why Sharaban K would have developed this Machiavellian plan.

"The investigation led us to assume that the accused wanted to go into hiding due to a family dispute and faked her own death for this purpose," Veronika Grieser said Monday morning, without giving further details.

If found guilty, the couple faces life sentences.
