An American woman is auctioning off a first-generation iPhone in its original packaging to fund her cosmetic tattoo studio. Most recently, a comparable auction brought in $ 40,000.

In times of 200-megapixel cameras, what is a smartphone with a 2-megapixel camera and a small 3.5-inch display but without 5G, 4G or just 3G worth?

Karen Green hopes it's at least $50,000.

Because the device in question is an iPhone from 2007, i.e. the very first generation, in its original packaging and has therefore never been used.

Green received the Apple device as a gift from friends in 2007.

Because she already had three phone contracts with Verizon at the time, but the iPhone was initially only supported by AT&T, she left it, wrapped in pajamas to be on the safe side.

This is what »Insider« reports.

Five years later, such iPhones were sometimes already being traded for $10,000.

But Green was reluctant to sell hers, according to the report.

It wasn't until a comparable device was auctioned off last October for just under $40,000 that she thought the time had come: In order to finance the cosmetic tattoo studio she had just opened in New Jersey, she decided to auction her iPhone as well.

»It took me almost a year to set up the studio.

And if you don't have an income for a year because you don't have a job, then your resources dwindle," she said, according to "Insider".

The goal is 83 times the retail price

The auction page now has a starting price of $2,500 and an expected final price of at least $50,000.

Since it was the then more expensive version with eight gigabytes of storage, that would be about 83 times the original retail price, which was $599.

The auction is already running and ends on February 19th.

So far there are no bids.

But even if the auction should bring in less than forecast: Thanks to the media coverage, especially in the USA, Green will definitely get plenty of free advertising for her studio.
