Magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Turkey and Syria: nearly 200 dead

The quake occurred in the Turkish city of Gaziantep, near the Syrian border, overnight from Sunday to Monday.


A very strong earthquake occurred overnight from Sunday to Monday in southeastern Turkey.

Of magnitude 7.8 according to the USGS (United States Institute of Geological Studies), it was located about 17 km deep under the city of Gaziantep.

This region is located about 50 km from the Syrian border.

The tremor was also strongly felt in this country.

The very provisional assessment of this earthquake which occurred at 4:17 a.m., or 2:17 a.m. Paris time, is at least 126 dead.

It keeps increasing.

It is at least 111 dead in Syria and 76 people who died in Turkey.

Hundreds more were injured.
