The patients of Prof. Caroline Demily, psychiatrist at Le Vinatier hospital in Lyon, were born at a time when autism was not diagnosed in France.
They grew up with this disorder without suitable support, and arrive in his service exhausted, after years of medical wandering.
Some have spent their lives hiding their particularities to adapt to society at the cost of great psychological suffering ,
says the psychiatrist, whose service specializes in the care of adults.
Others couldn't fit
in because their communication difficulties were too great
They developed psychiatric disorders – anxiety, depression – which were mislabeled and led to chronic hospitalizations.

It is these long-forgotten patients that the Interministerial Delegation for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders now wants to identify in order to offer them care that finally meets their particularities.
