AdBlue is essential for modern diesels.

But how long does the additive last if you store it properly.

Nothing works in modern diesel vehicles without AdBlue.

The urea takes over the exhaust gas cleaning, but is filled into an additional tank, since it could otherwise cause serious damage.

In addition to the petrol station, the additive can also be bought in the hardware store or in some cases in the supermarket.

But how long does AdBlue actually last?

Almost every diesel driver has probably asked himself this question at some point.

But first you have to know what AdBlue actually is.

This is a trademark of the German Auto Industry Association (VDA) for an aqueous urea solution.

Drivers of newer diesel cars with SCR catalytic converters must fill up the solution regularly alongside the diesel.

Store AdBlue correctly: When does the diesel additive expire?

The additive is injected into the exhaust flow and reduces the proportion of toxic nitrogen oxides.

This is the only way for modern diesel cars to reach the limit values of the Euro6 emissions standard.

The consumption is around three to five percent of diesel consumption, says the automobile club ADAC.

Since the AdBlue additional tanks are very different in size, they have to be refilled after about 5,000 to 15,000 kilometers.

Diesel drivers should respond to the vehicle's request quickly, because many a model will no longer start if there is not enough of the additive in the tank.

In principle, AdBlue can be stored for up to one year when stored correctly – at temperatures between minus 5 and plus 20 degrees.

The additive must also be protected from direct sunlight and heat (temperatures above 30 degrees).

In addition, the warehouse must be well ventilated.

Store AdBlue correctly: What happens after the end of its shelf life?

The question arises: What happens after the end of the shelf life?

That's easy to answer.

As soon as the shelf life is exceeded, the Adblue starts to decompose.

If it is then used anyway, damage to the catalyst system may occur.

The motor can also be damaged as a result.
