Samsung's Galaxy series is like a Japanese car - no tricks, but you get good value on all fronts. Does this year's Galaxy model have any surprises? We checked

If we compare Samsung phones to other areas of consumption, such as, for example, cars - the Galaxy series is like a Japanese car, in the sense that you always know what you are getting and who you can trust: a reliable, serious Android phone with good performance in all trims, but without the flashiness unusual.

solid.

This is how Samsung has been operating for years, and has rightly built a name for itself as the leading Android smartphone brand and the most significant competition for Apple.

If we jump to the bottom line, this is also the case this year with the S23 that was just announced, but if you're already here, let's get into the matter in more detail - because that's what we gathered for!

Design and structure

If it works, don't fix it—Samsung has had an identifying design for years, affectionately nicknamed the "Samsung Rectangle."

Their phones are rectangles with rounded corners, a metal chassis, and a high-quality plastic back, and even this year they are not deviating from the winning formula.

The design is clean, elegant, functional.

Unlike many manufacturers, Samsung does not believe in a "stage" for the three lenses on the back, and they sit each separately with a metal ring that surrounds it.

The result, in my eyes, is very elegant.

In general, there are some improvements here from last year, the design is a bit smoother, much more environmentally friendly according to the Korean giant, and the colors this year are really beautiful: the phone I received is in a spectacular pearl white, but there is also a beautiful bottle green, pink and black gray similar to granite.

Also on the back is the flash, and the silk ring of the brand's name - the design is very clean and smooth, the only thing that spoils it is an additional small text under the logo, it slightly "dirties" the clean look, and it could be given up.

The front of the device is all screen except for the selfie camera which is in the central hole.

At the bottom of the speaker grille, the charging socket for USB-C (which also contains a colored ring matching the body - nice), and the SIM drawer, which contains two cards, there is no place for a memory card, but the device does have an eSIM.

The power button and the volume button are combined on the right side, they also sit perfectly inside the body.

In short, the Galaxy S23 enjoys a clean, elegant and simple look.

Let's talk but a moment about the size.

It's a 6.1-inch device, relatively small by today's standard, but I and probably many others with non-giant palms might prefer it.

True, the display area is a bit small, but in terms of grip comfort and operation - it is an ideal size that also allows easy one-handed operation.

I really enjoyed the fact that it is a small device - something that is becoming increasingly rare in the landscape.

It's hard to find good and small Android devices anymore, and the Galaxy S23 is definitely a good option for those who care about the size - or the size of the device.

This little one weighs a total of 170 grams, and that's also a consideration - that it won't tear your pocket, literally.

Sound and display

The principle of "if it works don't fix it", also applies to the device's display.

The screen is the same fine screen as last year: it is a sharp and deep color AMOLED X2 display, with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

The things that did change are the protective glass (now Gorilla Victus 2) and the brightness level that was kicked up a little more: 1750 nits in high brightness mode instead of 1300. Small improvements.

The quality remains the same: this is a wonderful screen.

Its sharpness is great, all the shades in it are deep (blues, reds and yellows), cinematic scenes look great on it (of course, it's a bit small...), textures are very clearly visible on it (from the sky to the toe of a shoe) and in short, well, I was satisfied.

The speakers (hidden earpiece speaker at the front of the screen and the speaker at the bottom) also do a decent job, I think there is even a small improvement in the clarity and cleanliness of the sound compared to last year.

A little more power wouldn't hurt, but it's really hard to complain.

Bottom line, the Galaxy S23 is a great multimedia companion on the go.

Performence

With the Snapdragon 8 Generation 2 (Gen. 2) Samsung promises an improvement in performance especially for gamers, with improvements in graphics processing, support for Ray Tracing, an evaporation chamber for the processor and more.

It's definitely noticeable.

In 3DMark's Wild Life test, the Galaxy S23 just killed it and was declared too powerful for the test.

But while running I got very high frame rates of between 80-90 frames per second and I actually saw with my own eyes the improvements that Samsung is talking about (like the Ray Tracing and the quality of light rays).

So I moved on to the tougher test, Wild Life Extreme which is really designed for powerful phones and next generation processors.

Here the Galaxy S23 coped with respect.

Not only did he not cough, he didn't even cough: even in the tough test, he produced better results than 89% of the tested phones (the clean phone of the test also passed all the phones of its type), and left dust even for the iPhone 12 Max, which remained far behind compared to the -3872 points that the Galaxy S23 spent.

The average frame rate, even in the tough test, was 23 frames per second, which is certainly respectable, considering the fact that this test was designed and ran in full 4K.

So performance, there is here, and lots of it.

In this matter, Samsung promised and fully delivers.

Battery life

We didn't spend a lot of time with the Galaxy S23, but with normal average use, mostly phone calls and text messages, and some video watching and games, we were left with 50 percent battery, after almost two days of use.

Probably in more massive use, with video or gaming for hours, this time will probably be shortened to a day or a day and a half, which is still respectable - you won't run out of battery on a normal day.

Although the battery is small in volume, 3900 mAh, Android 13 manages it well, and hence a good and reliable battery life, also in this section.

Camera

And if we are talking about multimedia, let's talk about the cameras.

Unlike its big brother, the Ultra, which received a significant upgrade to a 200 megapixel sensor - the cameras here have not changed significantly from last year, except for the addition of some minimal optical capabilities: the main lens is 24 mm instead of 23 (negligible), you can now shoot video in 8K Also at 30 frames per second instead of 24, and a super slow shot of 960 frames per second with a resolution of 1080 instead of 720. Nice! The selfie camera has been upgraded to 12 megapixels and also got HDR capabilities along the way.

And how does the camera perform?

wonderful

In my humble opinion, the levels of detail and sharpness at the high zoom levels have been improved a bit in terms of processing from last year, but in most lighting conditions, the Galaxy S23 will produce great photos for you (see also gallery).

The night photos are overall well lit and fairly uniform.

The only thing I found that the camera has a bit of a problem to deal with is a strong backlight in a normal photo or a selfie, and that too - really small.

Overall, the quality of the photography here is excellent, and it is a reliable and good camera for professional content creators in general.

The bottom line

Just like a Japanese car, just like a meal at McDonald's - with the Galaxy S23 you know what you're getting: a small, balanced Android device with excellent performance and capabilities on all fronts.

If the size of the device is not a function for you, there is enough competition out there.

But if you have a fondness for Samsung and your other devices are already running around, or you're looking for an excellent and small Android smartphone, the Galaxy S23, again this year, delivers the goods.
