Soon: railway inspectors will not be required to have a high school diploma.

The Ministry of Transportation is preparing to change the law, which requires inspectors to have at least a high school diploma in order to work in the profession, which also requires a training course in Israel Railways.

The change is justified by the need to increase the number of train inspectors in accordance with the expected increase in the number of passengers, and according to the ministry's explanations, it is carried out after a staff work and comparison with the practice in other countries.

Today, according to the railway's job announcements, a full matriculation certificate is the first and central prerequisite in the job requirements, in addition to the ability to express oneself in writing and orally.

When technical abilities, experience working with an audience, knowledge of the English language, dealing with events in the field, pressure and multitasking and more - all of these are considered an advantage.

According to the proposed amendment to the law, in the opinion of Israel Railways and the Ministry of Transportation, even without the "strict" threshold conditions, according to them, that are used today, there is in the selection process and after that in the training course of the candidates to ensure that those suitable for the job will maintain a sufficient quality of the service.

Opening the position even for those without a matriculation certificate, you will expand, so the train hopes, the circles from which candidates for the position come, partly from the ultra-Orthodox sector, most of whose young people do not study Liva and do not take the matriculation exams.

According to the Israel Railways, "the trip managers (inspectors), like all the operational professions in the railway, pass railway entrance tests and a comprehensive and long course that prepares them for the railway position, compliance with these conditions is mandatory for acceptance into the railway and the position".

In their opinion, this training and the need to expand the pool of candidates will better fulfill the requirement to provide more professional inspectors, so that the level of service will not be compromised.

The railway also emphasizes that: "Unlike some countries of the world, in Israel the obligation to have an inspector on every trip, and sometimes even several inspectors, depending on the operational and service needs, in order to maintain an optimal level of service, is religiously maintained."

The role of the inspector, who is in fact the manager of the train journey, includes, among other things, preparing and inspecting the train before traveling alongside the driver, granting permission to leave the station, assisting passengers, meeting deadlines, announcing, enforcing and operating emergency situations.

The inspector training course lasts two months and includes an introduction to the train's technical setup and its operation, first aid, handling emergencies, an enforcement powers course and more.

During the course, the salary is about NIS 7,000 per month and after that, upon acceptance to the position, the salary increases to about NIS 10,000 on average, including overtime and night shifts.

The inspectors are accepted as full-fledged railway employees from the first day and receive tenure from the third year, at which time the salary also increases accordingly.

The recovery fees are considered among the highest in the economy, a training fund, taxis at night, camps for children, vacations and more.
