The Dualsense Edge for PS5 is the newest and shiny accessory for Sony's console • It is indeed a luxury premium product, but that doesn't mean it will succeed in making you a better gamer

Who really needs a PlayStation 5 controller that costs a thousand shekels?

With an emphasis on "need"?

No one, ever, anywhere.

Neither do you, trust us.

But who "wants" a PlayStation 5 controller that costs NIS 1,000?

It is likely that every gamer who brought the (not so) new Sony console into their living room.

Without blinking an eye, the new Dualsense Edge is the ultimate controller your palms can dream of.

It can do everything the original and excellent Dualsense can do, plus some nice improvements and upgrades.

But this gaming gadget costs in Israel about four times (!) than its original version, almost half the price of a new PlayStation 5 console, when you think about it.

And no, the Edge is not gold plated, nor silver.

And just for the cliche - he doesn't make coffee either.

Posh de Batanes

Let's ignore the price for a moment and refer to the product itself.

There are two main differences between the Edge and the original Dualsense, both related to the buttons.

First of all, the new controller is equipped with six additional buttons and switches: two buttons (or more precisely "pedals") that can be mapped on the lower back of the controller;

A pair of buttons in the lower front part designed to switch between profiles (we'll get to that later);

And a pair of switches on the upper back, right next to the triggers (L2 and R2), whose purpose is to adjust the sensitivity and resistance of those triggers (full press, half press or about a quarter press - effective in shooting games, for example, to release faster bursts).

There are 22 input means on the Edge compared to the 16 buttons of the Dualsense, and that brings us to the second difference.

As a general rule, any action of almost any button on the controller can be replaced and duplicated by the action of another button.

For example, if in a certain game the jump button is X, but you want to change the jump action to L1 or one of the back buttons that are easy to reach with your index fingers - go for it.

The idea is that using the index fingers, which were completely idle in the original Dualsense, will shorten the reaction time of the player, and allow the thumb to focus on only two buttons (effective for beat games, for example, when you want to perform a particularly complex combo).

In addition, the profile buttons, located as mentioned in the lower part of the controller, will allow you to switch between game profiles that you have created in advance.

That is, if you created a profile for "Col Nf Duty" where a back button replaces the load button, and another profile for "FIFA", where the same back button replaces the turbo button, you can choose and change the profile that suits your game with a simple button press. Nice ?Absolutely. How much will we actually use it? Not much, if at all, as we're perfectly fine with the normal button layouts of our games.

More upgrades?

Please: it is possible to pull out and replace the analog knobs of the Edge in case they wear out, and also calibrate their degree of sensitivity;

The controller case contains a thick and extra long USB cable that will easily reach your sofa (thereby eliminating the fear that the battery will run out during a stormy gaming session);

And they even threw in a catch that stabilizes the cable entry inside the console, so that it won't come loose as a result of a strong pull.

Heavy, and not just in the wallet

Despite all the improvements mentioned, you should also take into account two disadvantages (in addition to the price, yes?) that the Edge brings with it.

First of all, although the size of the two controllers is the same, the new model is heavier than the original version (335 grams compared to 280 grams).

Its battery life is also shorter: although we did not open a stopwatch and a lot depends on the way you play (with headphones, use of the internal speaker, etc.), but in general - if the battery life of the Dualsense is about 12 hours of play, the Edge Should last between eight and 10 hours at most.

Really not critical, and if we already received a low battery alert - it just reminded us that it was time to go to sleep.

So who is the Edge for anyway?

After all, we got along very well with the original model until today, and we didn't feel like we were missing out on anything.

The back buttons and the long charging cable are indeed very useful additions (we dealt less with profiles and various mappings), but no matter how you turn it, a thousand shekels is an unreasonable price.

For this money, the Edge might-maybe-maybe suitable for competitive gamers, for whom every split second could be fateful, but it's hard to believe it will bring them victories they wouldn't have achieved without it.

At the moment, the Edge is a high-quality premium product, but also very niche, which is why it's hard for us to recommend it to ordinary players.

Let them cut the price in half, and then we'll talk.
