Better understand suicide to better prevent it

Each year, one million people commit suicide worldwide.

In France, nearly 25 people end their lives every day.

Suicide remains the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds (after road accidents).

If the pandemic has not led to an increase in deaths by suicide, Public Health France stresses that the context (inflation, energy crisis, climate risk, conflicts, etc.) continues to undermine the mental health of French people and can contribute to increasing suicide risk.

While progress has been made in France since 2010 to reduce the suicide rate, it remains among the highest in Europe.

On the occasion of National Suicide Prevention Day last February, the Ministry of Health recalled that suicide prevention remained a priority.
