Keshet and Reshet repeatedly choose reality over reality. It's not escapism, it's embezzlement - voila! culture

The current affairs are loud and chattering in the studios all day, but during the dramatic, unusual, historical event - it disappears

There are those who are sure that there is nothing more important than the legal revolution and there are those who think that it is a radical national disaster, but ironically - both of them can agree on one thing: there is nothing more important happening in the country right now.

And this time, it's not a fight that is limited to panels and committees, but everywhere, and when the citizens take the right to speak.

This happens mainly every Saturday evening - at intersections and in the streets, when hundreds of thousands of citizens come out week after week to protest in Ayalon lanes in Tel Aviv and in front of the President's House in Jerusalem, in the north and in the south, city after city after city.

There is only one place where this does not happen: commercial television.

Yesterday, in the face of one of the largest demonstrations since the beginning of the protest against the legislation to weaken the justice system, they once again chose Bequest 12 and Network 13 to broadcast a reality show.

While masses of citizens are protesting against the government, a request was made to broadcast "Ninja Israel".

At a time when Israeli democracy is changing in an unprecedented way, Network 13 broadcast "Survival".

Faced with an extraordinary topical event that we are all cringing at, Keshet and Reshet chose transmitters that are empty of content - and ignored reality.

Everyone needs escapism sometimes, and certainly in a news-stricken country like Israel - even the viewers sometimes want to escape after particularly dramatic events.

But Bekashet and Reshet choose the opposite: the current affairs are loud and chattering in the studios all day, but during the dramatic, unusual, historical event - it disappears.

This disappearance is not escapism, it is an embezzlement of responsibility.

After all, this is the main role of the media: to be there when it happens, when something really important happens - not background noise, not statements from unknown parties about petty conflicts between politicians, not when there is a Torah Twitter storm, but when something really important happens in reality (even in the face of the violent settler attack in Hvara , the channels took time to come to their senses).

Certainly for those who think of themselves as "Israel's television" or those who once preached that "there are things more important than television".

This was understood even by channels with lower ratings.

And by the way, ignoring mass demonstrations is, after all, a political statement.

It is all the more jarring when what does get on the screen is bread and entertainment of the most cynical kind - poor games, worthless fights, dramatization of nothing and stupid hysteria from people falling into the water.

It may be worth money from advertisements, but it mainly shows what the commercial channels think of us: a captive and foolish audience that will watch whatever they serve.

They are wrong - and it will come back to them.

It's not just the public that comes out in droves and abandons them - after all, there are things that are much more important than television - the alternatives are also getting stronger, on other channels and on social networks.

The clan fire will slowly fade away, and will be left behind.

Reality doesn't fit the busy reality TV schedule? It's time to think about it again. The moment of truth for Israeli democracy has arrived, and most Israelis have already understood it. Good morning to Keshet and Reshet, it's time for you to wake up too.
