As is well known, the car industry is currently divided into two factions.

There are the manufacturers who are cautiously approaching the electric age, such as BMW - and those who are really energized.

Hyundai undoubtedly belongs to the latter, and the strategy seems to be working: The South Korean brand has a market share of 7.1 percent in Germany for battery-electric passenger cars, so-called BEVs.

That means third place behind Tesla and VW, and ahead of strong competitors like Opel, Audi, BMW or Mercedes.

The SUV Ioniq 5, which is based on a purely electric platform that also carries the group brothers Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60, has a significant share in this success.

The second Hyundai model is now the Ioniq 6, which comes with similar technology but completely different styling - a bit like Jules Verne might have imagined an electric sedan of the future at the beginning of the 20th century.

The rear in particular is reminiscent of the streamlined design of the golden twenties (100 years ago) with its Art Deco touches, plus LED light strip.

The roof line falls off significantly, inside tall passengers can definitely make contact with their hairstyle.

Everyone else travels very comfortably: the electro-typically lush footwell in the rear offers business-class legroom.

However, the high floor takes some getting used to, because the batteries are of course stored under it.

The luggage compartment is rather narrow, but is at least supplemented by a large frunk, the storage space under the front hood that is so popular with e-drivers, for example to accommodate the AC charging cable.

The driver looks at a wide digital display that extends over the center console and at monitors for the side exterior cameras.

You can like that, but you don't have to, because the Ioniq 6 comes with classic exterior mirrors as standard.

And there are already many extras for which competitors charge surcharges or subscriptions, such as smartphone connection via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, 18-inch alloy wheels, and many assistance systems.

When the Hyundai Ioniq 6 has started to move silently, the occupants enjoy the smooth ride, which is supported by the chassis trimmed for comfort.

The fact that the Stromer hisses off like Schmidt's cat when you step on the right pedal is something you're used to from this type of drive.

As does the fact that the power rating on paper doesn't affect it much.

Performance versions are available with 151, 229 and 325 hp, the latter with two aggregates and all-wheel drive.

The batteries store 53 or 77.4 kWh - the range king is the rear-wheel drive Ioniq 6 medium performance.

According to the official WLTP standard, it covers 614 kilometres, the top model still 583. The highlight: With this car, this information is not even hopelessly exaggerated.

During the test drive, consumption actually leveled off at less than 15 kWh per 100 kilometers and the range was over 500 kilometers.

Of course, at moderate speeds and temperatures.

The fact that the range is likely to melt on fast motorway stages and in the cold is bearable.

Especially since the Ioniq 6 with 800-volt technology (which only a few electric vehicles like the Audi e-tron GT offer) charges quickly, namely in five minutes for 100 kilometers.

It's a bit ahead of the Tesla Model 3 - and the American compact sedan can certainly be considered the Korean's worst competitor.

After Tesla's price reduction, it costs almost exactly the same, namely just under 44,000 euros in the respective basic configuration.
