Could an asteroid hit Earth in 2046?
Nasa announced on Twitter on March 7 the discovery of a near-Earth asteroid named "
2023 DW
" which would have a small probability of crashing into Earth on February 14, 2046. The object is currently located nearly 20 million kilometers away. from U.S.
It is currently the only asteroid classified at level 1 on the Turin scale, which assesses the risk of impact with Earth from 0 to 10.
The American space agency, however, wanted to be reassuring by specifying that the celestial object presented “
a low chance of having an impact
” on the Earth.
"
Current calculations show that the risk of collision is extremely unlikely and that there is no reason to attract attention or arouse public concern
", justifies NASA.
