UN: a historic world summit on fresh water

The international meeting which opens at the UN is the first of this magnitude since 1977, when the situation around access to drinking water is critical.

Although vital, fresh water is the poor relation of international negotiations.

Until today, only one world summit on the issue had been held, in 1977 in Mar del Plata (Argentina).

This shows the importance of the meeting which will open for three days in New York at the United Nations headquarters on Wednesday, March 22, World Water Day.
