UN: a historic world summit on fresh water

The international meeting which opens at the UN is the first of this magnitude since 1977, when the situation around access to drinking water is critical.


Although vital, fresh water is the poor relation of international negotiations.

Until today, only one world summit on the issue had been held, in 1977 in Mar del Plata (Argentina).

This shows the importance of the meeting which will open for three days in New York at the United Nations headquarters on Wednesday, March 22, World Water Day.

No less than 28 different United Nations organizations deal, each through its prism, with the issue of water.

But this dilution of responsibilities actually poses difficulties in finding funding, reaching a consensus and joint actions for access to fresh water, wastewater treatment, sharing of river resources between countries or the exchange of data on underground reserves common to several countries.

Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, hopes that the summit can finally
