Going strong: Ssangyong Musu returns to the market - voila! vehicle

2023-03-22T08:16:19.629Z

A new and old competitor joins the local work van market, which includes the Isuzu D Max, Toyota Hilux and, on paper, the Volkswagen Amarok as well. What does he offer?

Ssangyong Musu (Ssangyong)

A few days after the presentation of its electric SUV, months after it set out on a new path and a few weeks after winning the tender of the government vehicle manager, Ssangyong Musu, the 1-ton van of the Korean manufacturer based on the Rexton, officially lands here.

Completes another win for the manufacturer that already provides police patrol vehicles based on its SUV.

The Muso, which was launched in 2018 as a replacement for the Action Sport when production ended, arrives here after a facelift and an update that the model underwent, which includes increasing the dimensions of the box and improving its towing capacity.

Two of the van's weak points in its previous round in the local market.

In the facelift, it gets a shiny front (photo: manufacturer's website)

The new generation grows to 5.4 meters in length, 2 meters in width, a height of 1.9 meters and a wheelbase of 3/21 meters which is significantly larger than the previous Action Sports and places it directly in front of the competition, led by the Toyota Hilux which is slightly longer.

The ventral clearance is the same as that of the Hilux and stands at 22 cm (the publication on the Toyota website of 31 cm refers to the measurement of the highest part in the center of the ventral and is not relevant).

At the same time, the Toyota has better approach and departure angles than the Muso, which are 19.5 and 20.5 degrees respectively.

The dimensions of the Musso box are 1.61 meters long, 1.57 meters wide and 57 cm deep (for the purpose of comparison - 1.52, 1.54 and 48 cm in the Toyota).

The loading capacity is 1,165 kg (810 in the Hilux and 1,080 in the D Max). The towing capacity is 750 kg without brakes and 3,000 kg with brakes (3,500 in the Toyota-Isuzu pair).

The manufacturer's well-known 2.2-liter diesel engine is responsible for driving the Moso.

202 hp and 45 kg, here too it stands in a significant gap from the Toyota with the 2.4 liter engine with 150 horses and 40.8 kg and the Isuzu with the 1.9 liter engine, 163 horses and 36.7 kg.

Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission is responsible for its transmission to the wheels.

The drive is rear or dual with its combination by the dial in the cabin with a low gear ratio.

The rear differential lock is automatic.

Being based on the Harxton means that here too you will find the ladder frame of a real off-road vehicle, but there is a small change, while the damping is responsible for double wishbones in the front with coil springs, unlike its passenger carrier sibling, the van has a live axle and leaf springs in the back.

The driver's environment also comes from the Harxton and is more elegant than usual (photo: manufacturer website)

Being based on the Harxton also means that the Muso presents a more pleasant living environment than classic work vans.

It comes in two trim levels, the entry version is called EX and above it will be the Premium trim level.

In the entry version, it includes an 8-inch multimedia screen with built-in WAZE and connectivity to Android and Apple, the 12.3-inch digital dashboard, split climate control with air conditioning outlets for the rear seat, front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera, heated steering wheel, smart key, and more.

The Premium trim level adds electric steering to the front seats, they are also leather-covered, heated and ventilated, the rear seats are heated and a sunroof is above the heads of the passengers.

And the abundance of equipment leads to its one very problematic drawback - like Braxton, it also does not have a spare wheel.

It certainly sounds strange, but the savior tire is replaced here by an inflation kit and optimism.

Customers who will not equip it with a spare wheel themselves (for the price of space in the box) are invited to attach a coffee kit to the inflation kit, which will be waiting for extraction.

Ladder chassis, leaf springs and live axle - yes.

As far as the work van market is concerned, a good name is better than a good differential oil, you can ask the Toyota Hilux that has been going around with the same nickname since it was born in 1968.

While his competitors came and went, they changed names, but not their luck in the long-term deal with him.

But the Muso comes with his own cards for this round.

In terms of its competition in the 1 ton pickup truck market in Israel, it comes with two advantages in the form of the powerful engine and lower prices than those of the competitors.

While the Moso prices range from NIS 260,000 for the entry-level version to NIS 280,000 for the equipped version, the Isuzu D-Max starts at NIS 269,000 for the automatic dual-drive version and goes up to NIS 281,000, the Toyota Hilux with its 2.4-liter engine in the drive train The automatic double costs between NIS 267 and 280 thousand and if there is no budget problem, there is the Volkswagen Amarok whose price starts at NIS 360 thousand and has a uniform chassis and is much less relevant to this comparison.
