The figures are unequivocal: cocaine is becoming commonplace in France.
Earlier this week, Public Health France warned of the sharp increase in consumption and poisoning for several years.
The French Observatory of Drugs and Addictive Tendencies (OFDT) counted 23,335 emergency visits related to cocaine between 2010 and 2022, a figure which has tripled in the space of a decade, points out the report.
Visits to the emergency room primarily affect men (75%) and young adults, which corresponds to the consumer profile.
Patients are admitted mainly for intoxication (65%), dependence (13%) or withdrawal (7.5%).
The evolution is more marked in women (from 4.5 to 12.6 per 100,000 passages, against 12 to 29.2 for men).
In 2019, cocaine was involved in 12% of emergency room visits related to drug use, compared to 7% in 2015, according to data from the Organization for Coordinated Emergency Surveillance (Oscour) network.
