The birth of a cluster of galaxies has been observed for the first time, the one associated with the Spiderweb galaxy, so called because it resembles a gigantic cosmic spider intent on devouring smaller galaxies, like flies caught in a spider's web.

It is 10 billion light years away and was made possible thanks to the observations carried out with the Alma radio telescope of the European Southern Observatory (Eso) in Chile. The study, led by the University of Trieste and the National Institute of Astrophysics (Inaf), is published in the journal Nature and has made it possible to confirm the theoretical predictions elaborated over a decade with direct observations.

Galaxy clusters contain up to several thousand galaxies, as well as dark matter and a diffuse halo of hot gas, which has a mass that greatly exceeds that of the galaxies themselves and permeates the space between them.

The researchers, led by Luca Di Mascolo of the University of Trieste, have observed for the first time the large quantity of hot gas present in the 'gestational' phase of this cluster, destined to become one of the largest structures in the cosmos.

In particular, the authors of the study exploited the so-called Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, which occurs when the light produced by the Big Bang, which continues to propagate throughout the universe, passes through the hot gas, thus forming shadows in the images: measuring these shadows, it is possible to estimate the mass and pressure of the gas and map its structure.

"Thanks to its incomparable resolution and sensitivity - says Di Mascolo - Alma is the only telescope currently able to perform a measurement of this type".
