The WhatsApp
instant messaging application
continues to evolve.
The Meta-owned company is working on a new “audio chat” feature, which will be a
group voice calling service
that it hopes will become an alternative to platforms like Discord.
As published by
WaBetaInfo
, a site specialized in revealing the news of the messenger, WhatsApp will add this
"audio chat" function
to existing groups.
This new mode of communication could already be seen in one of the preliminary versions of the application.
Currently, the app has the possibility of
making group audio or video calls
enabled , although with restrictions on the number of participants.
Although many details about this functionality are still unknown, it is intuited that it will have some similarity with
Twitter Spaces or
Discord
rooms
.
The latter is mainly known for its voice and text chat service, although it also
offers the possibility of sharing files and using bots
to automate certain functions.

Additionally, Discord allows users to create custom servers where they can invite other users to chat,
share common interests, and collaborate on projects
.
Unlike WhatsApp, the platform is among the favorites of video game players, since it allows you to create voice channels to
communicate during online games
;
although it is also used by communities of music, art, technology and other topics.
When the feature is available it would allow all WhatsApp users to join this chat as listeners or active participants.

The new functionality is expected to allow
audio-
only conversations
without involving making a call, just browsing a conversation while listening in real time to other people within the group.
In addition, audio chats would also include
voice notes that
could only be heard once
, as is the case with photos or videos.
At the moment, this new function is not yet active, and has only been seen in version 2.23.7.12 of the beta of WhatsApp for Android.
WhatsApp: more new features coming in 2023
