Geek Rebellion: When will we have to start fighting artificial intelligence? - Walla! technology

If you are afraid of losing your job following the introduction of AI into the labor market, you should know the story of Ned Lod, the leader of the fight against the industrial revolution. This is the important lesson we learn from him

Ned Lud (photo: from Wikipedia)

The name of the guy in the picture was Ned Lud.

At first glance he looks disguised, but that's really not the case.

He wore what he had at home.

During his time, workers like him did not have too many clothes, because a lot of manual work was invested in the production of each item of clothing - and the price was accordingly.

He was able to finance even a basic food basket only through the hard (and not particularly efficient) manual labor of all his family members, who worked long hours from a young age until the end of their lives.

As you know, there were no pensions at that time.

At the end of the 18th century, at the very beginning of the industrial revolution, the owners of the textile factory where Ned worked decided to advance to automatic weaving machines.

Ned, who recognized them as an immediate threat to his livelihood, decided to deal with them in a way that people of his time knew how to deal with threats - to attack.

In doing so, he became the first warrior in technological development.

Many of his friends joined him, and also vandalized vending machines, until a new movement was formed.

Named, after Ned, the "Luddites".

The movement has grown particularly in the rural areas of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

The name of the Luddites has become synonymous with people who oppose any change, especially one related to technology.

On the other hand, the British government of those years also knew how to deal with threats with a heavy hand - and attacked back.

During the clashes that broke out between the Luddite movement and the authorities, more British soldiers participated than those who were at the front against Napoleon in Spain (this happened at the same time).

The Rebellion

of the Nerds It is not clear what happened to Ned.

It is likely that it did not end well for him, but it is clear that he was not able to stop the revolution that increased the industrial output by hundreds of meters, caused a significant increase in the number of inhabitants in the kingdom and raised the standard and life expectancy of the population.

The increase in the level of income allowed the citizens to send their children to school instead of to work, where they acquired a higher education that allowed them to improve their social and economic status, in a cyclical process, which is familiar to us to this day.

Let's go back to the 21st century, and the technological struggles that are still happening today.

These days a revolution is taking place in the field of artificial intelligence.

However, there are many differences between the current revolution and the industrial revolution of the late 18th century.

Artificial intelligence is a very smart entity, and it has learned from history that you should not mess with workers (not that there are many of them these days).

This time, the population whose livelihood is threatened is precisely the one where the most educated people are: doctors, high-tech people, craftsmen of all kinds and reporters of the CodeReview issue of the technology division of Bank Hapoalim.

They can be defined by a collective name: geeks.

They will not attack the factory owners who introduce new technology into their work environment, and in fact make them redundant slowly and carefully.

If we face the truth, there is really no way to attack artificial intelligence.

Another thing that can be learned from history is that every industrial revolution in the end is good for children.

It is not certain that all the representatives of the current generation will enjoy the road, but as my mother says - "What are we not doing for the children?".
