According to the data of the tracking company Pointer, in the first quarter of 2023 there was a 140% jump in theft attempts. If you meet these criteria - you are in trouble

Let's start with the good news, if you have an electric car your chances of waking up to an empty parking lot in the morning tend to zero.

According to the latest data from the tracking company Pointer, despite an alarming jump in the number of car theft attempts in the first quarter of 2023, electric cars are still not in the target of car thieves.

And here too it is very important to emphasize the word

still

.

Why?

We'll get to the other reasons right away, but according to a source in the company, the thieves generally still prefer not to take the risk of stealing a vehicle in an unknown state of charge and getting stuck on the way to the territories due to a limited range.

The less good news, in his estimation, this is going to change within a year with the entry of cars with a longer range into the circle of sought-after annuals and the increase in demand for spare parts for them.

According to the company's data, which as mentioned summarizes the first quarter of 2023, there is a 140% increase in theft attempts compared to the corresponding period last year.

If your car is from the 2021 model year - you are the focus of the thieves' interest, as this is the most sought-after year, followed by 2020 cars that account for 16% of theft attempts.

But the car thieves are not only stealing more, but also with increasing audacity - according to Ilan Goldstein, CEO of Poynter, in the past most thefts were committed at night in order to take advantage of the sparse presence of police forces and more fluid traffic that makes it easier to escape, however in the first quarter the trend of thefts continues and increases throughout the hours of the day and this is an increase of hundreds of percent in theft attempts per day compared to the corresponding period in 2022.

Even among the mix of thieves themselves there is a change.

"In the past we were used to seeing car thieves at young ages, in their second and third decades of life, thieves whose car theft was a combination of economic and nationalistic motives," Goldstein explains, "Recently Poynter has come across a new phenomenon of thieves aged 50 and over."

This issue can be related to the reduced suspicion of an adult driving the car as well as another factor which is the expertise and use of sophisticated theft equipment.

Hacking into cars today is not with an iron pick and drive with the key switch hack, but with advanced systems that create an identical copy of the cars computer and drive using it.

29% of theft cases are done this way.

Another and most common technique is duplicating a "golem" key while connecting to the data socket (OBD) in the car and driving the car.

In the third place, stealing a key from the client's house while breaking into it.

In fourth place is theft by an authorized person, that is, someone who had access to the car keys and these were duplicated by him, with 8% of the total number of thefts in this way. The figure is still not high, but something else is worth noting - this is an increase of 33% compared to last year.

In last place and with one percent of theft cases - robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

In 90% of the theft cases, cellular jammers are used that create a masking of communication and GPS signals in order to make it difficult to locate the stolen car.

The areas most prone to theft in order are the center (32%), the Shefalah (18% when last year it was 9%, doubling the number of thefts), the Sharon (16%), the south (14%), the north (12%) and Jerusalem without Change with 8%.

Depending on the demand for spare parts, which drives the theft machine, the most requested vehicles are jeeps, crossovers, SUVs and the like - 45% of theft attempts focus on them, with private cars in second place with 23%.

As reported in Vala!Car, in the case of two-wheelers (which are also used as a means of committing a crime) there was an 18% increase and they account for 13% of all thefts, commercial vehicles account for 11%, trucks and mechanical engineering equipment account for 6 and 2 percent respectively.
