Thanks to a sodium battery, the BYD Seaguell is said to be available in China for less than 9,000 euros.
There is a catch, however.
If you want to afford an electric car, you have to dig deep into your pockets or buy curious models like the Chang Li Freeman.
But the Stromer should be cheaper.
VW is aiming for example with the ID.
2all has a price of less than 25,000 euros.
A possible ID.1 could even be less than 20,000 euros.
At BYD, one has only a weary smile for such goals.
The Seagull could be available in China for just under 9,000 euros.
This puts the Stromer in competition with many a light electric vehicle such as the Opel Rocks-e.
With a length of 3.78 meters and a wheelbase of 2.5 meters, the Seagull is still ideal for the city.
However, its compact dimensions are not the reason why it is so cheap.
Rather, the battery technology makes this cheap price possible, as

In addition to the classic lithium iron phosphate battery, BYD also offers a 30 kWh sodium ion battery.
This should allow the electric car to travel around 305 kilometers according to the CLTC standard (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle).
What is special about this technology, however, is that lithium is no longer required.

The production is therefore much more environmentally friendly, since sodium occurs all over the world and in significantly larger quantities.
In addition, the sodium-ion batteries score with high charging speeds and are less prone to overheating.
The service life is also longer, with lower production costs.
Again, that's good for the price.

However, the low energy density and the high weight of the sodium-ion batteries are not so good.
For comparison: With the 38 kWh lithium battery, the BYD Seagull has a range of 405 kilometers - 100 kilometers more than with the new sodium technology.

According to t3n,
the official prices for the compact electric car
in China should be the equivalent of 10,700 to 13,300 euros.
However, marketing material that has already been leaked shows that the BYD Seagull is available from some retailers for as little as 8,700.
It is still unclear whether the cheap electric car, which celebrates its world premiere on April 18 at the Shanghai Auto Show, will also come to Europe.
