Where are there more trams: in Tel Aviv or in Ramla? Guess again - voila! A car

A report by the Ministry of Transportation reveals that Rama is the Israeli record holder in electric vehicle penetration: 16 cars per thousand residents, compared to 8 per thousand in Tel Aviv. How did it happen?

In recent months, the Israeli car market is undergoing one of the fastest and most significant changes in its history.

Beyond the accelerated penetration of cars made in China, the acceleration of the transition to electric cars is notable.

From a market share of about 10% in 2022, electric cars rose to a market share of about 16% in the first three months of 2023.

According to a report by the Vehicle Division of the Ministry of Transportation, the number of electric cars in Israel crossed the 60,000 mark for the first time before Passover.

This is still less than 2% of the number of private cars moving on Israeli roads, but the trend is clear.

But where do the buyers of the trams live?

According to the report, 12,063 streetcars are registered in Tel Aviv, one out of every five cars in Israel.

But surprisingly, Tel Aviv does not have the highest number of trams relative to the number of residents.

While the Tel Aviv District has 8 streetcars per 1,000 residents, the Ramla District has 16 streetcars per 1,000 residents. Even in Rehovot there are more cars with no exhaust emissions, 11 per 1,000 residents

. "A (ranking 9)? The Ramla subdistrict also includes localities such as Modi'in-Maccabim-Reot and Shoham (ranking 9). But the fact that the Rehovot subdistrict also includes Rishon Lezion and Nes Ziona shows that buying an electric car is not only a Tel Aviv matter. In the subdistrict

too The Golan (6.5 trams per 1,000 inhabitants) and the Kinneret region (6) can see a resurgence in the purchase of trams, most likely due to the high distance these residents have to travel every day to work and shopping. Considering purchasing an electric car? Tesla Model Y vs.

Even in the Judea and Samaria region there are already 6 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, probably due to the same financial savings of purchasing trams by those who travel long distances.

A low distribution rate of streetcars is notable in Jerusalem, with only 3 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, Haifa (4) and Be'er Sheva (4).

The streetcars are still relatively expensive, although in the coming months several new models will be launched here at prices of NIS 140-150 thousand.

On the other hand, the public charging infrastructure, both of fast stations and of slower stations that are cheaper in their rates, is still lacking, both in the number of stations and in the number of charging sockets in each of them.
