Surprise: MG will try to wake up the station wagon market in Israel with the electric MG5 - voila! vehicle

2023-04-24T12:36:10.777Z

After crossovers and sedan models, the first electric station wagon will also be launched in Israel next month, with a large trunk and a range of 400 km between charges. Will it succeed in awakening the category?

MG5 EV (MG)

About a decade ago, Ford Focus Station, Hyundai i30cw and Renault Megane Estate suddenly became hits in the leasing market, after years in which this all-familiar configuration was very negligible in the Israeli market.

But when these cars finished their leases and hit the sales lots the demand for them wasn't very high, to say the least.

The result can be seen in the new station market now.

Only two station wagon models are currently marketed in Israel, the Ford Focus (1,000 cc turbo gasoline, 146-150 thousand NIS) and the Kia Sid (1,600 cc turbo diesel or 1,500 cc turbo gasoline, both of which sell for 153 thousand NIS).

Even Toyota, whose Corolla Space was relatively in demand in the last decade, even when it was sold here under the Auris station branding, decided to stop importing the station version with the launch of the Corolla facelift version. Skoda offers the successful Octavia station only by special order. But now this limited market receives

Last week, prototypes of the MG5 EV were unloaded in Eilat.

A limited number of such cars have already arrived in Israel in tiny imports from Europe, but now these are the first cars to be offered by Lubinski, the MG importer, after the manufacturer finally made more significant allocations to the Israeli market.

MG5 is already the second generation of the Chinese family car, which is also produced in gasoline versions that will not touch us and underwent a facelift in 2022.

The electric version has a 156 hp engine, a 61 kWh battery and a range of 400 km according to the European WLTP standard. Acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h takes 8.5 seconds and the maximum speed is 185 km/h. Fast charging (DC ) is carried out at a relatively slow rate, 87 kilowatts.

Family dimensions: 4.60 meters long, 1.82 meters wide, 1.54 meters high and a wheelbase of 2.66 meters.

The trunk has a volume of 480 liters in European standards and 578 liters up to the roof.

Folding the rear seat will increase the volume of the trunk to 1,367 commercial liters.

Unlike some of the other trams, a tow hook can be attached, which is important for a model that wants to attach a bicycle carrier, and the towing capacity is 500 kg. Lubinski has not yet published the

local equipment package, but in Europe it includes a 7-inch multimedia screen, a 10.25-inch digital dashboard and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

The MG5 models are equipped with an active safety package that includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, including traffic jams and lane keeping. The system is capable of detecting pedestrians and cyclists. However, the vehicle has not yet been tested in the European crash test.

The price of the electric station will only be revealed on May 3.

In Europe, its price is the same as that of the long-term ZS EV, which is sold here for NIS 170,000, and for NIS 161,000 after cash down.
