In recent days, a piece of news has shaken the impeccable and pristine world of Toyota, one of the automakers with the best brand image: the company has admitted that it cheated on the crash tests of the

new Yaris

and three other models to facilitate its approval processes.

Akio Toyoda

, the current president and grandson of company founder Kiichiro Toyoda, publicly apologized, calling the act inadmissible.

"We consider this an

absolutely unacceptable

act that betrays the trust of our customers. We would like to sincerely apologize to our customers around the world and all related parties for the inconvenience and concern this has caused," the brand mentioned in the official statement.

The new generation of the Yaris is manufactured in Thailand and Malaysia to supply the local markets and also Mexico.

shared responsibilities

The irregularities were committed by

Daihatsu Motor Co.

, a brand of the Japanese consortium that manufactures Toyota Yaris ATIV, Toyota Axia, Toyota Agya models in Thailand and Malaysia to supply those markets and others such as Mexico and Ecuador, to name a few.

Daihatsu confirmed that

it incorrectly modified the front door skins

for side impact tests, violating the procedures and methods stipulated by the regulations to achieve better results.

Toyota reported that the internal complaint was made in April and that it involves

almost 90,000 units

, of which 76,289 correspond to the new Yaris that is exported, for example, to Mexico.

The other 11,834 belong to the Toyota Axia, whose production began in February of this year.

Likewise, the Toyota Agya will begin production in June (it will be exported to Ecuador), while there is another model involved that is under development and its name has not been revealed.

Toyota and Daihatsu have a joint development agreement, although it is Daihatsu that carries out the process from development to passing the necessary certification tests under the original equipment supply (OEM) agreement.

Toyota then applies for vehicle type approval and then sells them under its brand name.

As a result of this problem, shipments to countries where approval had been granted were

suspended

.

There are plans for the new generation of the Toyota Yaris to be manufactured in Brazil, although no official confirmation has yet been made.

"In the future we will carry out the test again in the presence of the inspection and certification authorities, and if it is confirmed that the side impact performance meets the standards, we will resume the shipment," the automaker reported.

In the statement, Toyota also detailed that it "will carry out a detailed investigation, thoroughly gathering the facts to understand the situation, determine the true cause and work diligently to prevent it from happening again."

It is important to note that the affected Yaris correspond to a new generation that is

not yet marketed in our country

.

Currently, the model arrives imported from the Brazilian plant in Sorocaba (Sao Paulo), where there are plans to start producing this new edition.
