"Rude awakening": E-car driver is confronted with the "hard truth" while traveling

The comparatively long charging time, which can be 30 to 60 minutes even at fast charging stations, is still an often cited problem of e-mobility.

A new e-car driver didn't exactly have a good experience on a road trip. He recorded his odyssey for posterity.

Denver - While at the beginning of the current e-car boom the comparatively short ranges of the models were still strongly criticized, this problem has now been solved by the advancing technology. That's why even longer road trips with e-cars are no longer a problem. A family covered 4,500 kilometers with an electric car, the electricity costs "blew them away".

A newly minted electric car driver from the US state of Colorado wanted to go on a road trip through the neighboring state of Wyoming with his electric Nissan. However, as Fox News reports, the driver was confronted with the "hard truth" when he needed a full 178 hours to cover a distance of 286 miles (about 5.15 kilometers). A Tesla driver also had a lot of problems on a road trip after a service appointment was cancelled.

E-car newcomer embarks on a road trip through the US state - "it was a rude awakening"

According to Fox News, Alan O'Hashi from Colorado had bought an electric car for the first time with a Nissan Leaf and wanted to take his new vehicle on a 2,600-mile trip through Wyoming. However, the American did not even come close to making it that far in the Japanese automaker's electric car. "I had done some research and knew a little bit about electric vehicles, the charging process and possible obstacles," he explained. "And I planned the trip in advance." However, since the Nissan was his first battery-powered car, he had no practical experience in dealing with an electric car.

For a distance of 178 miles (about 286 km) it takes about 2.5 hours, depending on the traffic conditions. Alan O'Hashi needed a full 15 hours for the distance. "It was a rude awakening when I realized that charging wasn't going as fast as some people would have me believe - especially the dealers," he said in an interview. "And I think people like me fall for it blindly." In fact, the comparatively long charging time, which can be 30 to 60 minutes even at fast charging stations, is still an often cited problem of e-mobility.

Nissan driver blames "lack of adequate infrastructure" for Odyssey

After his rather unpleasant first experience with an electric car, Alan O'Hashi blamed a combination of his own mistakes and the "lack of adequate infrastructure" for the odyssey. However, there is also another problem with the Nissan Leaf, which makes an expanded charging infrastructure particularly important. The manufacturer specifies an electric range of 385 kilometers, but in a test by the ADAC, the Nissan Leaf only had a range of 200 kilometers on one battery charge.

With another electric car, such as a Model 3 from Tesla with a range of 491 kilometers or an EQE from Mercedes-Benz with a range of 530 kilometers, O'Hashi's first electric car experience would probably have been much more positive, as he would not have been dependent on a charging station as often. However, it should be noted that the two models mentioned are also significantly more expensive than a Nissan Leaf.

O'Hashi decided to continue the journey through Wyoming despite the problems, taking notes and publishing his account of the odyssey under the title "On the Trail: Electrical Vehicle Anxiety". "It's a cautionary tale about the need for people to recognize the current constraints and the potential for the future," he said.
