The ferry Maria Galanta transported this Wednesday twenty Comorians in an irregular situation in Mayotte, to the island of Anjouan.

A reopening after three weeks of conflict. The ferry Maria Galanta resumed Wednesday its rotations between Mayotte and the neighboring island of Anjouan (Comoros), suspended since April 24, while the France conducts contested operations against illegal immigration on its territory of the Indian Ocean.

The ship left the port of Dzaoudzi at 12:11 local time (17:16 a.m. in Paris). According to the prefecture of Mayotte, the Maria Galanta carries <> commercial passengers and twenty Comorians in an irregular situation on French territory: four having accepted a "voluntary departure" and <> being the subject of a "deportation to the border".

The boat is scheduled to arrive at the Anjouan port of Mutsamudu around 16 p.m. local time (15 p.m. in Paris). The Comorian government had warned Monday that it would only welcome Comorians in an irregular situation willing to return to the country, in a context of arm wrestling with Paris on the subject.

Ports closed for three weeks

The Maria Galanta had not made a crossing since 24 April, the Comoros having decreed the closure of its ports that day to protest against the desire of the French authorities to massively expel Comorians in an illegal situation as part of the "Wuambushu" operation.

Three days later, the shipping company SGTM, which operates the rotations, said the route remained suspended "until further notice", given a confusing "context".

Members of a "collective of citizens of Mayotte" supporting Operation Wuambushu were present Wednesday at the port of Dzaoudzi. They had threatened to block the departure of the Maria Galanta if it did not embark Comorians in an irregular situation.

"There are only about twenty on board, but this is already a start," said Safina Soula, the president of the collective, present on the dock to ensure the departure of the ship. "We are waiting to see how he will be received in Comoros," she added.

Members of his collective have blocked access to several health centers in Mayotte since May 4 to demand an intensification of operations to combat illegal immigration and "displace" slums on the island.
