Highlights: In Rhineland-Palatinate, the police stopped a drunk Golf driver. As it turned out, the man didn't have a driver's license at all – and apparently had been for quite a long time. In England, a Hyundai driver had been driving on the roads without a "rag" for 50 years. The presumed record holder, however, is a Mini driver: The man, also from England, had driven a car for 72 years until the police finally caught him.

A driver's license can be quite expensive – depending on how many driving lessons you need and how often you have to repeat the exam. In a Europe-wide comparison, there are also countries where you pay significantly more for the "rag" than here. Driving without a driver's license is quite risky – but there are apparently always contemporaries who succeed in doing so over a very long period of time. A VW Golf driver in Rhineland-Palatinate was apparently on the road without a "rag" for two decades.

On the road in serpentine lines: police stop drunk Golf driver without a driver's license

According to the police, a road user had noticed a VW Golf that was traveling in serpentine lines – and had then informed the responsible management. As a result, a patrol moved out and subjected the 53-year-old driver of the Golf to an alcohol pre-test. And it was clear: 1.99 per thousand were measured in the man. But that's not all: the Golf driver was not in possession of a driver's license either.

Golf driver in police control: On the road without a driver's license for 20 years

Obviously, it was nothing out of the ordinary for the 53-year-old to drive a car without a driver's license. As he explained to the officials, he had been driving without a driver's license for 20 years. Of course, his journey was over at this point: the police officers secured the vehicle key and took the Golf driver to the station for a blood test. The man now has to answer in two criminal proceedings.

It's hard to believe that someone has actually been on the road for 20 years without a driver's license. Nevertheless, there are still far more extreme cases: In England, the police stopped a Hyundai driver who had been driving on the roads without a "rag" for 50 years. The presumed record holder, however, is a Mini driver: The man, also from England, had driven a car for 72 years without a driver's license until the police finally caught him.
