Fuel prices in Germany: Diesel over 20 cents cheaper than gasoline

2023-05-26T14:41:07.457Z

Highlights: Diesel drivers in particular currently have reason to rejoice, because the fuel costs significantly less than Super again. Diesel drivers can save a few euros by comparing fuel prices before refueling. Diesel and gasoline cost the most in the morning hours. In the evening between 18 p.m. and 20p.m., however, it is cheapest. In Hamburg, for example, refueling is particularly expensive in the late evening. The price difference between the two types of fuel increases again and rises to 21.1 cents per liter.

Diesel will be cheaper, but gasoline will be more expensive. And this for the second time in a row. The development of fuel prices could hardly be more different.

Driving a car is expensive fun. Fortunately, however, the days of fuel prices beyond the two-euro limits are over. In the meantime, prices are back to halfway pre-war levels. Diesel drivers in particular currently have reason to rejoice, because the fuel costs significantly less than Super again and is getting cheaper week after week.

Currently, a litre of diesel costs an average of 1.576 euros – 0.4 cents less than in the previous week. This is a continuation of the decline at the pumps that has been going on since 11 April. Super E10, meanwhile, increased in price by 0.3 cents and costs an average of 1.787 euros nationwide. This was the result of an ADAC evaluation on 23 May.

Price difference between diesel and gasoline is widening

"The price difference between the two types of fuel increases again and rises to 21.1 cents per liter," writes the automobile club on its homepage. The price difference is thus higher than the approximately 20 cents per litre by which diesel is taxed at a lower rate. As recently as mid-February, fuel prices for both varieties were at the same level.

Meanwhile, there was little movement in the crude oil market. A barrel of Brent crude cost around $77 on Wednesday, about two dollars more than the previous week. "This does not result in any major impulses," says the ADAC. There are differences depending on the federal state. In Hamburg, for example, refueling is particularly expensive.

ADAC advises: Compare fuel prices before refueling

With a few tips, however, drivers can save a few euros: For example, the first gas station does not always have to be the cheapest. Therefore, it is advisable to compare fuel prices beforehand using an app. The automobile club also recommends drivers of gasoline engines to fill up with Super E10 instead of the more expensive E5 fuel – if possible.

A glance at the clock can also help, because there is a lot of potential for saving here. For example, diesel and gasoline cost the most in the morning hours. In the evening between 18 p.m. and 20 p.m. and 21 p.m. and 22 p.m., however, it is cheapest. In the U.S., a silly dance also helped recently.
