The new 5 comes with gasoline, plug-in and full electric engines, while at this stage only the petrol and electric versions are presented and produced. BMW's control system, the iDrive, is version 8.5 which, with a supported cellular network, will offer 5G connectivity. There is also support for the Android Auto operating system, which one can only hope that it will reach Israel as well.

The new 5 Series begins BMW's saloon transition from petrol to electric. When in its new generation will be offered gasoline, hybrid and full electric engines

Every once in a while, BMW tries to push the boundaries when it comes to design, and in most cases it does so with the 5 Series, especially starting with the fifth generation of 2004, when Chris Bungle introduced BMW's then-new design language. Only 19 years have passed and BMW is doing it again with the new 5 Series (G60), the eighth generation of the manufacturer's saloon car produced since 1972.

And this is not something that can be taken lightly, although the range of models of this manufacturer has evolved significantly in these two decades, the 5 Series is still a key anchor among the conservative customers of this manufacturer. It is the bridge between the simple and "popular" models such as the 3 and 4 Series and the top floor of BMW - the 7 Series.

And after its last two design darings, with the "beaver's teeth" grille in the 4 Series and the very extroverted design of the current 7 Series, it continues to present an unusual look even in the new 5 Series.

Although underneath this cover, and although it is a new generation, it is a car that uses the familiar CLAR platform from the outgoing generation. With additions to the overall length of 10 cm to 5 meters, another 3 cm to the width with 190 cm and a height of 1.51 meters (an addition of 3.5 cm). The wheelbase is 3 meters (an additional 2.5 cm). Another change in dimensions that should also improve the dynamic characteristics is the expansion of the wheel strip by 8.5 cm.By the way, the 7 Series, as with it, here too BMW splits the issue of propulsion of the 5 Series in two approaches on the same car - gasoline in a mild hybrid configuration, plug-in hybrid and electric in the same model, in contrast to the path chosen by Mercedes, which left the competing E-Class to internal combustion engine customers and made the dedicated electric EQE available to those who choose to switch to electric.

Inside the 5 Series, the appearance is very reminiscent of that of the 7 Series. The dashboard and multimedia are deployed with two screens in sizes of 12.3 and 14.9 inches in a concave structure. BMW's control system, the iDrive, is version 8.5 which, with a supported cellular network, will offer 5G connectivity. And Samsung owners and similar mobile owners will be happy to hear that from now on there is also support for the Android Auto operating system, which one can only hope that it will reach Israel as well. Ambient lighting in the cabin is powered by a light strip with crystal cuts that embeds touch surfaces to control the opening and closing of doors, air conditioning vents and more.

Another technology in the 5 Series is offered in the worlds of independent driving capabilities, where the parking assistant will be able to "remember" parking maneuvers for a distance of up to 200 meters and perform them independently. Also, in countries where the system is approved for use, the 5 Series will be able to drive without driver contact on highways at speeds of up to 130 km/h. Overtaking exits will also be carried out alone, with all that is required of the driver is a look in the side mirror to confirm the performance.

As mentioned, the new 5 comes with gasoline, plug-in and full electric engines, while at this stage only the petrol and electric versions are presented and produced - again, very similar to the 7 Series that added the plug-in only later in the model's life.

At the base of the petrol engines, a 4-litre 2-cylinder engine with 190 hp accompanied by a 48V electric system. Acceleration to 100 takes 7.5 seconds and the top speed is 230 km/h. The automatic transmission also continues from the previous generation, with 8 speeds.

The plug-in versions will be the 530e and 550e. The first with a 2-litre 4-cylinder engine and 299 hp combined. and the second, a 6-litre inline 3-cylinder with 489 hp and all-wheel drive. The battery capacity increases from 12 to 19.4 kWh, allowing for an electric driving range of between 90 and 101 km depending on the version. The performance of these variants, which will be added to the lineup during 2024, has not yet been announced.

The electric versions called the i5 also come in two powertrains. Both have an 81.2 kWh battery, the first being the 40e with a single rear motor providing 313 hp, accelerating it to 100 km/h in 6 seconds and up to a maximum of 193 km/h. Its stated range is between 497 and 582 km, a variation due to rim towers and different tire sizes – the larger the rim, the lower the range.

The more senior version, the M60, has, besides improved M Division brakes and brakes, two electric motors that create all-wheel drive and 510 horses in the normal mode and up to 601 shared horses in the temporary "boost" mode. Acceleration to 100 takes 3.8 seconds and top speed is 230 km/h. And since there are no free meals, its weight, performance and lesser drag coefficient shorten the range from 455 to 516 km.

According to BMW's statement, it will go from 5 to 205% battery in 30 minutes on a supporting charger and 80 minutes of charging at a maximum rate will add 30 kilometers.

The design is the same, it's just the absence of exhausts that will tell you who it is in front of you (Photo: manufacturer's website)

While marketing of the new 5 will begin in Europe towards the end of this year, the car is expected to arrive in Israel in early 2024. According to the production schedule of the model in the first stage, these will be the gasoline and electric models, while later this year, when the plug-in hybrid versions enter production at the end of the first quarter of 2024, these may also arrive in Israel.
