He was found in an "advanced state of decomposition" in a car in July 2022 in Hasparren (Pyrénées-Atlantiques). Prosecuted for the murder of her baby, a 22-year-old woman challenged Wednesday her pre-trial detention during a hearing at the Court of Appeal of Pau.
According to the reading of the file by the investigating chamber, when it was discovered by the gendarmes of the small Basque town of Hasparren, the corpse of this newborn was covered with several garbage bags and in a state suggesting a death "at least two months" before. But neither the exact date nor the cause of death could be determined by forensic examinations because of the "advanced state of decomposition" of the body.
'Lies and manipulations'
The child's mother was arrested quickly after the macabre discovery and indictment for "murder of a minor". According to the Republic of the Pyrenees, this volunteer firefighter of Hasparren, aged 22, has been placed in provisional detention at the prison of Pau since last February, after several months under judicial control.
The suspect told investigators she denied pregnancy following a rape, giving birth alone in her apartment in April 2022 before her child died "choking" a few days later.
She requested her to be placed under judicial supervision before the investigating chamber of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday. Her continued detention was requested by the Attorney General, who highlighted the "multiple lies and manipulations" of the defendant during the investigation. The decision was reserved until 13 June.
