Tesla unstoppable: Model Y the best-selling car in the world

More and more people are opting for an electric car when buying a car. This is also reflected in the global sales figures of the manufacturers. In the first quarter of 2023, for the first time, it was not a combustion engine that took first place, but an electric vehicle: the Tesla Model Y.

The SUV prevailed over the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla models, according to an analysis by Jato Dynamics. At 44,890 euros, the Tesla Model Y costs only slightly more than the RAV4 in Germany. In the U.S., for the price of the electric car there ($47,490), almost the base versions of the Corolla ($21,550) and RAV4 ($28,275) get.

According to figures from Jato Dynamics, the Tesla Model Y was sold 267,200 times worldwide in the first quarter. An increase of 69 percent compared to the previous year. The Corolla follows closely behind with 256,400 units. Toyota sold 4,214 units of the RAV700.

However, Tesla itself does not give an exact breakdown of sales and only reported that more than 400,000 Model Y and Model 3 were delivered in the first quarter. With the competition still lagging behind in electric cars, the Texans can continue to extend their dominance. Not least through multiple price reductions, which increase the pressure on the established carmakers.
