An essential warning signal in the face of a dangerous situation, pain is sometimes predictable, especially when combined with an invasive medical procedure, and it can now be perfectly avoided. The various pain plans have had a major effect on acute pain, with notable successes especially in hospitals: all health structures are now subject to an obligation of result, and not only of means as in chronic pain.
"Acute pain related to care is well managed during the patients' stay, but we manufacture chronic pain every day at a distance from surgical interventions," regrets Professor Eric Viel, of the pain assessment and treatment center of the University Hospital of Nîmes.
