The attack on Jean-Baptiste Trogneux, Brigitte Macron's great-nephew, shocked much of the political class. In the first place, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron. The latter had denounced "unbearable and unspeakable acts", while his wife Brigitte Macron was indignant at the "cowardice" of the authors. A relative unanimity from right to left had run through the French political landscape.

Aged 20, 22 and 34, the three main suspects were initially due to be tried in Amiens in immediate appearance, including for violence in assembly, but their lawyers asked for more time to defend them.

The prosecutor of the Republic of Amiens, Jean-Philippe Vicentini, requested and obtained their placement in provisional detention, because, according to the president of the court, "the risk of repetition of the facts". The prosecutor's office argued that "in democracy, you have to talk, you can't knock."

"We can talk about social cases"

The three men suspected of targeting the man on the sidelines of a demonstration against the pension reform have been placed in pre-trial detention until their trial, postponed until Monday. The three defendants, already convicted in the past for violence and assault, present profiles of marginals. The youngest, Florian C. (22), is a disabled worker because of his illiteracy; the third, Yoan L. (35), is homeless, according to l'Obs.

"In 15 seconds, we realize that we need a psychiatric expertise," the latter's lawyer, Ibrahima Ndiaye, said at the May hearing. Eight people had been arrested in this case and four were released Tuesday night at the end of their police custody. "We can talk about social cases," said Marc Blondet, the lawyer of the third defendant, Adrien F., who struggles, according to him, to read and write. "These are young people who have a chaotic journey, difficulties especially of a psychological nature," he said. For the lawyer, "we try to give a political character to an event that is not".

Four other people arrested in this case were released after being taken into custody. A 16-year-old girl, also prosecuted, is due to be tried later by a juvenile judge. The trial is scheduled to begin at 14 p.m.
