American and Canadian researchers present this Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications a totally innovative method of contraception for cats. For the first time, scientists have used gene therapy to prevent the reproduction of domestic felines. The approach, successfully tested at this stage on six females, could become a much less invasive alternative to the current surgical sterilization.
The stakes are particularly high for the millions of stray cats around the world, says David Pépin, associate professor at Harvard Medical School and author of the study. They often have difficult living conditions and pose a threat to a large number of wildlife species.»
