The victim is a Russian citizen who lived in Egypt. The man, born in 1999, was killed in a shark attack near a beach in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada, Reuters reported on Thursday.
"In this context, we ask Russian citizens to remain vigilant when in the water, strictly observe the bathing and diving bans established by the Egyptian authorities, and strictly comply with safety instructions," the Russian consulate in Hurghada wrote on its Facebook account.
In a video posted on social media purporting to show the incident, a person appears to be struggling to escape a shark. Egypt's environment ministry said the tiger shark had been captured and its examination revealed "abnormal behavior ... who caused the incident." He added that swimming and water games would be suspended for two days starting Friday.
Two women killed in 2022
The Red Sea is an important tourist destination in Egypt. Sharks are not uncommon but very rarely attack swimmers if they do not exceed the authorized limits.
In July 2022, two tourists, an Austrian and a Romanian, were killed by a shark near Hurghada. In 2018, a Czech tourist was killed by a shark off an Egyptian beach in the Red Sea, as was a German in 2015 and a German woman in 2010.
