The ADAC advises spectacle wearers to use anti-reflective lenses. The windshield should also be cleaned regularly from the inside and the windshield wipers should be kept in good condition. In autumn, the sun is often low and blinds motorists. This is dangerous. With simple aids, the risk of accidents is reduced.

The fact that summer is over becomes apparent at the latest when the days become significantly shorter again. And the sun is also lower in autumn than in the months before. For drivers, this can easily become a danger because they can be blinded. Pedestrians and cyclists must expect not to be seen in time.

According to the ADAC, accidents due to low sun occur around eight times more often than accidents in foggy conditions. "In general, as many as two-thirds of all weather-related accidents involving personal injury occur due to glare," explains the automobile club on its homepage.

Low sun dazzles: sunglasses and visor help

But what is the right way to react to the blinding sun? Instinctively, most drivers probably reach for the sun visor first. If this does not help, sunglasses are also used. ADAC and the traffic experts from TÜV Thüringen also recommend these aids.

However, the sunglasses also have the disadvantage that the already dark environment is further darkened. Lenses that are too dark are not allowed at the wheel anyway. The ADAC therefore advises spectacle wearers to use anti-reflective lenses. In addition, the sunglasses must be cleaned regularly. According to TÜV Thuringia, an elevated seating position can also help.

Low sun dazzles: Always keep the windscreen clean

It is also important that the windscreen is always clean, as dirt and streaks only scatter the light shining on the window glass even more. The driver is then blinded by the low sun even more than he already is. The windshield should also be cleaned regularly from the inside.

Accordingly, the windshield wipers should also be kept in good condition. "If the windshield is not properly clean and thewiper blades have streaks, visibility is quickly poor. In the worst case, broken wipers even scratch the windshield," emphasizes the ADAC. It is therefore better to change more frequently and check whether there is enough wiper fluid.

Other tips: Orient yourself to the rolling traffic, be ready to brake and increase the safety distance. It also makes sense to adjust the speed to the poorer visibility. Anyone who drives with dipped headlights or daytime running lights on is also recognizable to other road users earlier. Special care must be taken when turning and driving up. Here, the front passenger can provide support if he has a better viewing angle.
