Opel is fully committed to the electric car. All new models are to be electrified as early as 2025. The Stellantis subsidiary builds the batteries itself.
The end of the combustion engine, it is getting closer and closer. From 2035, only climate-neutral vehicles will be allowed to be sold in the EU. Only engines that are only powered by e-fuels are to remain permitted. But they don't play a role at Opel, even though Stellantis already has 28 million cars compatible with it. In Rüsselsheim, the focus is clearly on the electric car.
Opel pulls the plug on combustion engines: new launches from 2025 only electric cars
Opel already has 15 electrified models on offer, such as the small city runabout Rocks-e. Opel wants to continue on this path and sell at least one purely battery-electric model to each series as early as 2024. "From 2028, we will only offer battery-electric cars in Europe," explains Opel CEO Florian Huettl in an interview with Bild.

As early as 2025, all of Opel's newly introduced vehicles are to be purely electric. This is followed by the Rüsselsheim-based Volvo, which recently announced that it would build the last diesel engine in 2024. The Swedes are also fully committed to the electric car and had warned the competition against a too slow changeover.
Opel wants to build batteries in Europe – with lithium from the Upper Rhine Graben
Opel wants to build the batteries for its electric cars itself. At the traditional site in Kaiserslautern, a gigafactory for batteries is being built together with Patern in the joint venture ACC (Automotive Cells Company). This is also scheduled to go into operation in 2025.
"The lithium required for this will then not come from overseas, but over short distances and, above all, from the Upper Rhine Graben in a climate-neutral manner. There, we want to extract geothermal lithium deep from the ground with our partner Vulcan Energy," explains Huettl in an interview with Bild.

But that's not all. From 2026, Opel wants to sell electric cars for around 25,000 euros, Huettl told Reuters. Similar announcements have also been made by sister brands Fiat and Citroën. VW is also aiming to launch an electric car for around 25,000 euros in the next few years.
