Presented for the first time as a concept at the IAA 2019 Motor Show and then became a small series of prototypes - made available as shuttle vehicles at the IAA Mobility 2021 - the BMW iX5 Hydrogen SUV has become a reality, albeit out of commerce and built at the moment in over 100 specimens that are used internationally for demonstration and testing purposes.
The propulsion system of the iX5 Hydrogen – which is essentially an electric car whose energy is supplied by hydrogen fuel cells instead of the battery – is further proof of the BMW Group's expertise and development capacity in the field of locally zero-emission technologies.
In the future of mobility, as repeatedly underlined by the Munich Group - there are not only electric vehicles, but also concrete uses of alternative solutions such as the use of non-fossil fuels and above all hydrogen as additional options for BMW for the future CO2-free use of individual vehicles.
BMW iX5 Hydrogen, after tests in different parts of the world and after the launch last spring in Holland, has now also arrived in Italy and more precisely in the hinterland of Venice, an area that more than many others awaits concrete interventions to improve air quality and environmental protection.

A destination, that of BMW, which was taken to allow the press, dealers and decision makers to make contact with this model that can no longer be futured. And experience the advantages and ease of use of hydrogen in real use. To do this, BMW referred to the first road distributor for H2 in Italy - that of Eni in Mestre - which has been in operation since last year as part of a normal petrol and diesel station. Recall that in Italy there are only two in operation. The other is in Bolzano, the H2 Center of the Institute for Technological Innovations Bolzano, but which is located within an area of society.
In the new Enistation in Mestre, in San Giuliano, it is therefore possible to refuel hydrogen for cars, buses and transport vehicles using two supply points, one at 700 bar for cars and one at 350 for heavy vehicles. The capacity of the plant is over 100 kg / day (quantity easily increased even if the market requires it) and it is possible to refuel hydrogen in about 5 minutes.
At the Enistation in Mestre there are, in the area dedicated to hydrogen, innovative and specific security and fire safety equipment. In this plant - which will soon be followed by two new hydrogen distributors in San Donato (Milan) and Taranto - also two columns for electric charging in fast and ultrafast mode. The peculiarities of this system are not limited at the moment to the absolute attention to safety or to the great ease of refueling with the dispenser which is similar to that to 'load' LPG or methane cars with gas. Since this is an experimental phase, the display of the distributor shows only the quantity (in kg) of hydrogen introduced into the tanks, but not the price.
In fact, for the moment the refueling cannot be paid on the spot but must be agreed with Eni, as is currently the case for institutional customers or companies, such as that of Venetian public transport.
If hypothetically we showed up today at the Enistation pos for the 6 kg needed for the full iX5 Hydrogen you would spend from 78 to 90 euros (based on national average prices, source Linde) but the goal, not far away, is to go down to 40-50 euros. This would make the H2 solution - as can be calculated on the basis of the BMW range of 500 km - competitive with diesel.
This 'alignment' of prices will certainly be determined by the new production structure on which many stakeholders have already committed themselves and the expansion of the Italian distribution network by 2026 as envisaged by the PNRR. The total funds (103.5 million euros) will be used to create a network consisting of 38 hydrogen refuelling stations (including the two existing ones) by that deadline.

36 projects were eligible for public funding. In particular, about 27 million will be invested in Veneto (9 distributors), almost 21 million in Trentino-Alto Adige (6) and about 16 million in Piedmont (5) and Lombardy (4). As far as Central and Southern Puglia are concerned, 8 million will be invested for 3 distributors, in Lazio 3 million (2) and in Calabria 2 million (1).
