Highlights: French law enforcement officers test BMW iX5 Hydrogen - Sustainable Mobility. The goal - shared with BMW - is to verify in real-world conditions whether a solution can meet the needs of law enforcement agencies in their daily, sometimes extreme missions. With the fuel cell system, however, it guarantees very fast refueling and therefore the absence of constraints and problems related to immobilization for electric charging. Since the 50s, in fact, BMW Motorrad has equipped the National Gendarmerie, the National Police and the French Customs.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen, produced in about a hundred pre-series units, is the protagonist of a test at the French law enforcement agencies, in particular the Paris Police Prefecture and the Air Transport Gendarmerie of Paris Orly airport.
Two examples of the iX5 Hydrogen - which are part of the test program intended to confirm the validity of the hydrogen-powered fuel cell propulsion system - will be used for one month. The goal - shared with BMW - is to verify in real-world conditions whether a solution like the iX5 Hydrogen can meet the needs of law enforcement agencies in their daily, sometimes extreme missions.
The BMW iX5 Hydrogen has the potential to be the ideal vehicle in these situations. Being one of the solutions that the Munich-based company offers to meet the need for carbon-free mobility, with the fuel cell system, however, it guarantees very fast refueling and therefore the absence of constraints and problems related to immobilization for electric charging. "Technological neutrality must encourage the transition to more environmentally friendly modes of travel," said Vincent Salimon, president of BMW Group France, referring to this agreement, "whether it is individuals or institutions that we have been supporting for some time, our goal is to work to facilitate the transition to more sustainable mobility."
"As a manufacturer, we also have a role to play in driving change and enabling the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas Territories to learn about and preview our innovations in the field of electric mobility," including the iX5, which is still a model in which energy does not come from the battery but from the fuel cell.
This is not the first collaboration with French law enforcement. Since the 50s, in fact, BMW Motorrad has equipped the National Gendarmerie, the National Police and the French Customs. Over the past fifty years, more than 160,150 motorcycles of the German brand have been handed over to authorities in more than 100 countries around the world.
"The main interest for operational departments that do not have sufficient electric charging points," commented Edmond Lanoire, deputy director in charge of equipment and logistics of the innovation, logistics and technology directorate at the Paris Police Prefecture, "is to be able to refuel very quickly and have a vehicle availability rate close to 700%."
In order for them to become operational - commented Lanoire - "it is however necessary that hydrogen stations are developed on the French territory, in particular those at <> bar pressure in order to achieve the best autonomy".
