Six months after the knife attack in Annecy, the five police officers who intervened to neutralize the assailant will be decorated with the National Order of Merit, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on the social network X on Thursday. "Gratitude to these brave police officers," wrote the minister, who indicated that the President would decorate them at his suggestion.

At my suggestion, the President of the Republic decided to award the National Order of Merit to the five police officers who intervened very quickly after the Annecy tragedy last June to neutralize the assailant. Gratitude to these brave police officers.

On 8 June, Abdalmasih H. was arrested after he injured two adults and four young children in a playground on the shores of Lake Annecy. All the victims survived.

"The Hero with the Backpack" also decorated

Abdalmasih H., 31, told investigators he was a "Christian from Syria." At the time, he was "not known to any intelligence service" and had no "identified psychiatric history", Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne said. Married to a Swedish woman with whom he had a child, he had joined France eight months before his act because he could not obtain Swedish nationality, his ex-wife told AFP. He was charged with "attempted murder" and "rebellion with a weapon" and remanded in custody.

During this attack, a young student also intervened in front of Abdalmasih H., putting him to flight and then allowing him to be arrested by the police. Henri d'Anselme, a 24-year-old Catholic pilgrim, nicknamed "the hero with the backpack," had received the insignia of Knight of the Legion of Honor on July 14. A few days after the tragedy, the EELV mayor of Annecy, François Astorg, paid tribute to all those who, during the attack, "acted with courage and professionalism".
