"The Istat data for the first 9 months of 2023 are fortunately encouraging, because I think that the mere announcement of a new tightening of the new "highway" code has led to more controls and an 8% reduction in accidents and 9% in mortality. I hope it will be a reversal of the trend that will accompany us in the coming months, because 3,200 deaths are an Italian municipality that disappears every year and a duty that it is impossible to think of continuing to pay." This was said by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini from the stage of the event on sustainable mobility organized by Most in Milan. The minister explained that he "entered the ministry with a toll of human lives in the last year estimated at 3,200 deaths per year. We have a duty to imagine the mobility of tomorrow, with artificial intelligence that we should not be afraid of but that must absolutely be understood and accompanied, regulated but not stopped, because it would be crazy to stop the future in Italy. 90% of accidents depend not on the vehicle but on the human factor", therefore "road education, prevention and controls".
"Obviously," Salvini said of the inclusion in the new Highway Code of the system that blocks the car if the driver has been drinking. - You also need to talk to the manufacturers. Something that does not exist in the market cannot be imposed as a rule today. Let me give the example of the alcohol lock, which I have asked to be included in the new Highway Code. It is a device that, in the event of a repeat offender at the wheel, prevents the engine from starting. Obviously, we need to make sure that car manufacturers can equip vehicles with these tools."
