A Strasbourg schoolboy was taken into custody on Friday, the day after teachers at his school protested against death threats against a French teacher, a judicial source said.

The 14-year-old boy, who was in the third grade at Kléber Middle School, responded to a summons and presented himself at the police station. He was taken into custody and denied having made any death threats. On Thursday, about <> teachers demonstrated in front of the school, denouncing the threats suffered by one of their colleagues after he confiscated a mobile phone.

"The student told him: 'I'm bringing friends back to the exit, I'm killing you,'" Gilles Comte, a history and geography teacher, told AFP. "This is the straw that breaks the camel's back," the teacher continued, adding that since the start of the school year, "a colleague has been assaulted by a former student who had entered the school with two other students," and that there have also been "three explosions of firecrackers inside the school."

'No support from management'

"There is no communication, no support from management, we feel abandoned," lamented Gilles Comte. He said his colleague targeted by the threats is a teacher who is "very involved" and was "very touched" by the incident. He filed a complaint on Tuesday afternoon and has been on sick leave ever since.

"I condemn in the strongest possible terms this unacceptable verbal attack," Strasbourg rector Olivier Faron said at a press conference on Thursday afternoon. He went to the school to talk to the principal and colleagues of the threatened teacher.

The school, one of the largest in Strasbourg, welcomes about 700 secondary school students, as well as a high school and preparatory classes, i.e. a total of about 3,000 students.
