The raid led to the indictment of eight people on charges related to drug trafficking. Arrested on Monday in a district of Villeurbanne during an operation involving 200 police officers, seven people were indicted as part of a judicial investigation for "drug trafficking, criminal association, money laundering, possession of weapons and ammunition", the prosecutor's office detailed in an email.
Four of them, "suspected of being the managers and organizers" of the trafficking, are in pre-trial detention. The others have been placed under judicial control and are banned in Tonkin, a district in the west of Villeurbanne, on the border with Lyon, where a series of three shootings in a week, including in broad daylight, had greatly worried and marked the inhabitants in early November.
One person sentenced to 4 months in prison
A total of €30,000 in cash, 90 grams of cocaine, 600 grams of cannabis resin and a firearm with ammunition were seized during the "Place nette" operation during which 16 people were arrested, the prosecutor's office said. Earlier this week, seven more people were arrested and one was charged with "possession and transport" of narcotics. Another has already been sentenced to four months in prison.
Additional troops had already been deployed in mid-November in the Tonkin district after shootings around deal points left one person injured. These episodes were described by the prefect of the Rhône region, Fabienne Buccio, as "jolts" linked to an earlier police operation that she said "disturbed" the traffickers. So far, nearly 160 police operations had taken place in the neighborhood since the beginning of the year. About <> people were arrested in connection with drug trafficking.
Elsewhere in France, several large-scale operations have been carried out against drug trafficking, including in Dijon where the CRS 8, specializing in urban violence and trafficking, intervened following the death of a father, victim of a stray bullet Sunday. According to police, 2023 is already shaping up to be a record year with a 57% increase in homicides and attempted homicides linked to drug trafficking.
