Highlights: Four children and a teenage girl have reported kidnapping attempts since October 17 around a town in the north of Le Havre. A psychosis seems to have taken hold of families in the area of Magnevillette. Since mid-October, a psychosis seems to have taken hold of families in the area of Magnevillette, a small town north of Le Havre (Seine-Maritime). Attempted abductions have been reported by several children. This led to the opening of an investigation entrusted to the gendarmes.

What are we talking about?

Between 17 October and 1 December, four reports were collected by the gendarmes: parents of primary school pupils in Magnevillette reported "behaviour that was perceived as suspicious by the children". Less than ten kilometers away, in Épouville, last Friday, a 15-year-old girl also reported an attempted kidnapping by a motorist, reports Paris Normandie.

Reports taken seriously but not consistent

An investigation for "attempted kidnapping" has therefore been entrusted to the Le Havre research brigade, the gendarmerie tells us, even if "no offence is characterized" and even less "attempted kidnapping".

Reports of the children, aged about 6 to 12, differ. While some say it's a white van, others "talk about a completely different vehicle, with different colors," the police said. Because of their young age, their testimonies are taken not only "seriously" but also with caution. According to the mayor of the commune interviewed by Paris Normandie, the events took place particularly in the evening near the church.

What measures have been taken?

Despite the lack of confirmation that a possible prowler would attack children in the Magnevillette sector, military patrols have been reinforced, the gendarmerie said. While an officer is providing security in front of the school in the town of 800 inhabitants, a call for vigilance has been published on the "Vigilant Neighbours" platform, in direct contact with the gendarmes.

"At the next municipal council meeting, on Monday, December 18, we will have a discussion about video surveillance cameras," Patrick Fontaine, the mayor of Magnevillette, told the regional daily, assuring that he receives "regular phone calls" from parents.
