The green arrow is intended to make it easier to turn right. However, it also leads to confusion among drivers and leads to mistakes. Do you have to stop or not?
Green means walking, red means standing. Every child knows this traffic light wisdom. And the same applies to drivers: When the light is red, it's time to wait. Anyone who does not comply with this will receive a fine and, in case of doubt, even have to surrender their driver's license. But there is one exception: the green arrow. This also allows you to turn right at a red light.
Green arrow at the traffic lights: stop or continue?
However, not every driver knows what to do if there is a green arrow at a traffic light. Are you allowed to continue driving directly or do you have to stop at the stop line first, as with a stop sign? The confusing answer to this question: both!
But not everyone knows that. Therefore, many make a typical mistake and just keep driving. But when does which rule apply? It depends on what kind of green arrow it is. Next to the metal sign, there is also a glowing turning arrow. In both cases, motorists would have to comply with different rules.
Green arrow or green arrow: When does what apply?
If there is a black metal sign with a green arrow next to the traffic light, the same rules apply as for a stop sign. If the traffic light is red, drivers must stop at the stop line. Only when there is no danger to other road users may you turn right. "Particular attention must be paid to pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle traffic in the approved traffic direction," says Karsten Raspe from TÜV Thüringen. A second stop at the line of sight is also recommended at the green arrow if the road is not clearly visible from the traffic lights.

The situation is different when the green arrow appears as a light signal. Like a green light, drivers can turn without stopping first. There is even an obligation to turn! However, if the arrow does not light up, then the same applies here: Stop!

Green arrow at the traffic lights: In case of violation, points threaten in Flensburg
With the amendment of the Road Traffic Ordinance, the regulation has also become somewhat more complex. In the future, there will also be a green arrow around right turns for cyclists. To do this, however, they must be on a cycle path or cycle lane. However, the green arrow can only apply to cyclists.

In case of doubt, a violation of the green arrow rules can even be very expensive. The decisive factor here is whether other road users were endangered in the process. Then there are even points in Flensburg.
