They perished in the flames. Two men, aged 35 and 45, died in a fire in their apartment on Monday night in the Tournezy district, south of Montpellier (Hérault), according to the Montpellier Gazette and several local media. According to initial findings, the two men died as a result of smoke inhalation.
When firefighters arrived at the scene of the tragedy, they discovered two bodies in the burned-out apartment. They are two men, occupants of the dwelling. According to the emergency services, the door was blackened and there was no release of flames, which tends to favour the possibility of a smouldering fire, which would be the cause of the tragedy.

In a message published on X, the mayor of Montpellier Michaël Delafosse indicates that an investigation is underway to determine the causes of the tragedy. The Socialist politician, who went to the site on Tuesday morning alongside the prefect of Hérault François-Xavier Lauch, said the fire was "accidental".

The complete evacuation of the building was initially considered, but only some occupants of the residence left the premises while the firefighters intervened. The fire did not cause any significant damage, requiring the relocation of other residents. On the other hand, the Maison de quartier Caillens was open for the day. The investigation will now have to determine the causes of the fire.
