Students called for the "immediate suspension" of the director, who has been in office since 2021. The investigation is continuing in the preliminary stage, the Paris prosecutor's office said on Monday. "An aggressor at the head of Sciences Po". About fifty students blocked the entrance to the historic building of Sciences Po Paris (7th arrondissement) on Tuesday morning to demand the resignation of its director, Mathias Vicherat, who was placed in police custody between Sunday and Monday in a case of domestic violence.

"We call for the immediate suspension of Vicherat and his resignation for reasons of exemplarity," said Inês Fontenelle, student vice-president on the Institute's council (Student Union) and member of the board of directors of the National Foundation for Political Science (FNSP).

The rally was organized at the call of Sciences Po student unions. The blockade does not impede student entry to other campus buildings located in central Paris. Most of the students or employees interviewed declined to comment. "We should wait until we have more information on the situation," said one student, who preferred to remain anonymous.

No complaints filed at this stage

In office since 2021, Mathias Vicherat and his partner, accused each other of domestic violence and were taken into custody on Sunday evening before being released on Monday. "The forensic medical unit did not find that either of them was totally unable to work, and neither of them wished to file a complaint at this stage. The investigation is continuing in the preliminary stage," the Paris prosecutor's office said on Monday.

Mathias Vicherat "will address all the Sciences-Po communities quickly to clarify the situation," said Laurence Bertrand Dorléac, president of the FNSP, in a message sent Monday evening to the members of the institution's board of directors. Mathias Vicherat had succeeded Frédéric Mion at the head of Sciences-Po Paris in November 2021, who was forced to resign in February of that year for having concealed suspicions of incest against political scientist Olivier Duhamel.
