The announcement came as a shock to Sciences-Po Paris. The principal of the prestigious Parisian school, Mathias Vicherat, was taken into custody on Sunday for domestic violence. He and his partner, director Anissa Bonnefont, accuse each other of violence. They were both released on Monday evening and at this stage, no charges have been filed. A preliminary investigation, opened by the Paris prosecutor's office, is underway.

Mathias Vicherat must "address all the Sciences-Po communities quickly to clarify the situation," said the president of the National Foundation for Political Science (FNSP), in a message sent Monday evening to the members of the institution's board of directors.

A man of networks

Mathias Vicherat, 45, took over as head of the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris in November 2021, in the wake of the shock of the Olivier Duhamel affair. The revelations of suspicions of incest, after the accusations of his daughter-in-law Camille Kouchner, had pushed Olivier Duhamel to resign with a bang. Mathias Vicherat also succeeded him at the head of the National Foundation for Political Science, the beating heart of the school, which dictates its orientations.

His landslide election — 19 votes out of 23 — had provoked some criticism that he lacked knowledge of the world of education, La Croix reported at the time. "His lesser knowledge of higher education has been compensated by an enormous amount of work to understand, his ability to listen to the various actors and to formulate a synthesis of the school's needs," defended Jeanne Lazarus, president of the IEP board, quoted by the daily.

Mathias Vicherat is a man of networks. This former student of the IEP of Paris, from which he graduated with two masters in political science and public management in 2000, studied at the ENA in the same class as a certain Emmanuel Macron, the former communication advisor Gaspard Gantzer or the CEO of Radio France Sibyle Veil. The senior civil servant began his career in the prefecture's offices (in Picardy, then in Bobigny), before being appointed head of the territorial division at the General Directorate of the National Police.

His career took a political turn in 2010 when he joined the cabinet of the socialist mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, and then Anne Hidalgo's team. In 2016, he began working for major French companies. First at the SNCF as deputy general manager — the general public sees his face during massive breakdowns such as in 2017 at the Montparnasse train station and strikes — then at Danone. The 2018 Choiseul think tank list places him among "the economic leaders of tomorrow".

Elected in the middle of #sciencesporcs

His placement in police custody caused an earthquake on rue Saint-Guillaume because he had taken office in the midst of a wave of denunciations of sexual and gender-based violence. A few weeks earlier, students had denounced the sexist and sexual violence of which they were victims in the country's IEPs under the hashtag #sciencesporcs.

In 2022, in a video broadcast on Science-po TV, Mathias Vicherat praised "a unique device in France" set up in the school. Students had the opportunity to confide in an outsourced listening service managed by the association France Victimes and access to legal aid. "We have made a commitment to have an investigation period of less than two months to characterize the facts before a possible disciplinary sanction or legal consequences," explained Mathias Vicherat.

"We call for the immediate suspension of Vicherat and his resignation for reasons of exemplarity," said Inês Fontenelle, student vice-president on the Institute's council (Student Union) and member of the board of directors of the National Foundation of Political Science (FNSP) on Tuesday.

Beyond his career, Mathias Vicherat is the former partner of Marie Drucker, with whom he has a son born in 2015. He is also the author of an essay on rap "Pour une analysee textele du rap français" published in 2001.
