The traffic sign 268 says: From here on, you can only continue with snow chains. The ADAC refers to this with a view to road conditions that are already wintry in some cases.
They are not a substitute for winter tyres – but if the roads are covered with ice or snow, snow chains can also improve grip. On some routes, especially in mountain and ski regions, snow chains may even be mandatory. This was pointed out by the ADAC in a press release dated 10 November.
When are snow chains compulsory? Pay attention to road signs 268
If you are unsure whether you need to put on snow chains, you can orientate yourself by the traffic indicator 268 - the round, blue sign with the corresponding symbol, according to which snow chains are mandatory. "If you see one on the side of the road, you as the driver of a motor vehicle must put on snow chains," it says on ADAC.de.

Anyone who does not comply with the snow chain requirement risks a fine
"This is true even when the roadis actually free of snow and ice." However, according to the General Administrative Regulation for the Road Traffic Regulations (VwV-StVO), sign 268 may only be used if the traffic and weather situation actually requires the use of snow chains. According to the ADAC, if you do not comply with the regulation, you risk a "warning fine of 20 euros". The traffic sign 268 also applies to vehicles with all-wheel drive, the ADAC also emphasizes in its statement. Snow chains are also no substitute for winter tyres.

What should you consider when skiing in Austria?
If you are going to Austria by car for skiing, you should also prepare accordingly. In Austria, for example, from 1 November to 15 April, there is a "weather-dependent winter equipment obligation". If drivers do not comply with the regulations, they can face a hefty fine.
