While winter beckons with an idyllic blanket of snow, an invisible danger is hidden underneath: flash ice. With a few tips, you will still reach your goal safely.

Winter has Germany firmly in its grip. For drivers, the cold season brings numerous challenges. Snowfall and slippery roads in particular make life difficult for you. But flash ice is also a problem, because it forms within a few moments and is hardly visible.

After all, sometimes the weather service announces the flash ice, but often it forms without warning, which makes it even more challenging and a great danger for drivers. It forms whenever raindrops hit the frozen ground and freeze there. Within a few seconds, a mirror-smooth ice surface is created. So what do you do if you are surprised by flash ice on the way?

Flash ice is imminent: Drive carefully and with foresight

Basically, the only thing that helps is to drive carefully and with foresight. In concrete terms, this means keeping an eye on the temperature display. Even at a temperature of three degrees, it can be dangerous. This is especially true for bridges or aisles in the forest. In many cars, therefore, a warning of slippery roads is displayed from three degrees.

You should also keep an eye on the traffic around you. If another vehicle starts to slide, you should take your foot off the gas immediately. It is also important to check the condition of the road surface at regular intervals. To do this, hold the steering wheel firmly and brake briefly. If you notice that the road is slippery, increase the safety distance to the vehicle in front. If you need to brake, do so sensitively. Also, avoid hectic steering movements.

Danger of flash ice: ADAC advises to leave your car at home

If you're driving on the highway and multi-lane roads in flash ice, keep your lane as much as possible, advises T-Online.de. You should refrain from overtaking manoeuvres in these adverse weather conditions. The same applies to the use of branch lines with little traffic. These are often only used later by the gritting service.

The ADAC even goes one step further and advises: "If you are surprised by freezing rain on the way, it is better to take a break and, if in doubt, wait for the gritting service." The reason for the automobile club's warning: Neither ABS nor ESP help in real flash ice. Accordingly, it is important that the winter tyre has enough residual tread.
