Hateful graffiti against Muslims was painted on the night of Thursday to Friday on the doors of the mosque in Guingamp (Côtes-d'Armor), according to the cultural association of Muslims in the city, which has filed a complaint. The inscriptions are hostile to the wearing of the veil and refer to the Breton headdress.
"We've been living in Guingamp for forty years and we've never experienced any aggression, verbal or otherwise. We filed a complaint with the gendarmerie, who came this (Friday) morning," said an official of the association that manages the mosque. About 100 people attend the prayer site, according to the official.

The façade of the mosque building and a side door were targeted by the inscriptions, the same source said. The tags would have been made "with black paint", in the night, and committed "to the detriment of the associative center activity and leisure space of Roudourou, which serves, among other activities, as a prayer room for the benefit of people of the Muslim faith," according to Nicolas Heitz, prosecutor of the Republic, whose words are relayed by Ouest-France.
The inscriptions "have a racist character," the prosecutor said, adding that investigations are underway to find the perpetrators. They are placed under the authority of the Saint-Brieuc public prosecutor's office, and have been entrusted to the Guingamp gendarmerie brigade, "supported by the research brigade".

The hateful tags have caused a widespread reaction in the Breton city. "It's distressing, we're outraged. This is the first time this has happened in Guingamp. What matters to me now is to bring comfort without wanting to highlight imbecility," said Mayor Philippe Le Goff, according to Ouest-France. The New Anti-Capitalist Party also said it "resolutely condemns the attack on the Guingamp mosque last night" and gives its "full class support to the Guingamp community of immigrant origin".
